Hamilton, Ohio 1900 a trainload of machinery, bound for Japan from the Black Clawson Company, passes Over the Great Miami River, and the B Street Arches. The seventeen railroad arches, 665 feet in length, and built of Dayton stone, crosses three streets at the tops of the houses. The Butler County Court house, The Presbyterian Church, Zion Lutheran Church, First Saint John United Church of Christ, and St. Joseph Catholic Church, form the Background. These architectural marvels were designed by Hamilton native, John S. Earhart, who died during Civil War service. The Arches, built in 1850 when the Railroad came to Hamilton, begin on the west side from the river’s edge, and continue to C Street. In the 1890’s, Dr. Henry Mallory wrote about the Arches in a published book of reminiscences, “This beautiful monument should be the pride of every man, woman, and child in Hamilton, where it should stand for a thousand years.”
The train was from the Cincinnati Hamilton & Dayton Railroad. The locomotives were called Ten-Wheelers because they had four pony trucks, and six driving wheels with no wheels under the fire box. They were referred to as (4-6-0).
